06

How to prepare a trekking

An excursion is planned at home. The causes that the Alpine rescue and the CAI reported more often in accidents in hiking are trivial: disproportionate itinerary than preparation, late departure, inadequate equipment and footwear, uncontrolled weather. These six passes are done the night before, in 20 minutes.

On this page: official data = taken from CAI, CNSAS, AINEVA or regional weather services, with the link to the source · estimate TREKANDO = calculation or agreement of this site · your data = measured by your hikes.

01

Choose based on numbers

Not at the picture. The three data that count are elevation gain (D+), development in kilometers and difficulty. The tiring difference, the kilometers consume time, the difficulty says if you need experience.

  • First release of the season: maximum 600 m of D+
  • Good training: 1000–1200 m of D+
  • Add 20% if the backpack exceeds 8 kg

02

Calculate time, then time

The travel time is not the trip time: add stops, photos, lunch. Then work backwards from the desired return time and check the time of sunset.

  • Ascent: 300–350 m of elevation gain per hour
  • Discipline: 450–550 m per hour
  • Floor: 4 km/h
  • Supports: +15 min every 2 hours

03

Read two weather, not one

At the altitude counts the zero share, the wind and the time of thunderstorms, not the symbol of the sun. In summer the storms arrive from the early afternoon: you leave early and you are returning by 15.

  • Regional ARPA and provincial bills
  • Avalanche bulletin (also in May, at altitude)
  • Call the mountain hut: knows the residual snow

04

Prepare the layered backpack

Also, in July, even for two hours. At altitude you lose about 6 °C every 1000 m and the wind does the rest.

  • Shoe with carved sole and sustained ankle
  • Windproof/ Raincoat + fleece
  • 1.5–2 l of water, simple sugars
  • Frontal, dressing kit, thermal sheet
  • Chart 1:25,000 + GPS track offline

05

Leave it to me

To a precise person, with itinerary and time of supposed return: if you need a search, know where to look changes everything. The CNSAS repeats it in every prevention campaign.

  • Name of the route and starting point
  • Return time within which to give the alarm
  • Share the live location if you have field

06

Know what to do if something goes wrong

Call me the 112, stay where you are, make you visible. If you can, first activate an app that transmits the coordinates.

  • International signal: 6 calls per minute, then 1 minute break
  • Do not go down by canalons or "scorciatoie"
  • If the fog drops: stop, do not improvise

The difficulty scale CAI

It is the theme that you find on the signs, guides and all the tabs of this site. Reading it well avoids 80% of trouble.

SigLandWhat do you need?
TTourist. Mulattiere, forest roads, alleys of valley bottom and lakeside, modest slopes.Low trekking shoes, no specific experience.
EHiking. Paths marked on various soil, steep traits, short passages on stone or residual snow.Boots, safe step, multi-hour training.
EEFor experienced hikers. Traces, nails, small rocks to be overcome with the hands, even exposed traits not equipped.Absence of dizziness, experience, ability to orientate.
EEAFor experienced hikers with equipment. Fermented routes and paths equipped with cables and stairs.Homologated ferrata kit, helmet, harness, training to use.

In winter everything changes: the scale for skiing and snowshoeing

With the snow the path disappears and the ground becomes assessable only through Avalanche bulletin (European scale from 1 to 5) and slope of slopes: above 30° the risk of detachment grows clearly. For ski touring you use the Blachère scale, which describes the difficulty ski resort of the descent; for snowshoes it counts above all the exposure to the danger of avalanches of the path.

SigLandWhat do you need?
SnowshoeingRoutes along valley floors, plateaus and broad ridges, with slopes below 30° and no crossings beneath slopes loaded with snow.Rackets, gaiters, sticks, ARTVA+pala+slow where the ground is open.
Cross-country skiingPiste jokes and tracks for classic technique or skated, at the bottom of the valley. No valuation risk.Bottom equipment, light layered clothing.
MSMedium skier: regular slopes up to about 30°, descent without forced steps.Skiing, skins, ARTVA, shovel, probe; reading the bulletin.
BSGood skier: slopes up to 35°, narrow strokes, snow often not ideal.Good technique in every snow, autonomy of evaluation of the mantle.
BSA / OSAWith mountaineering routes: glaciers, ridges, rampages and peaks.Corda, crampons, pickle, roped progression technique.

Winter rule: avalanche bulletin the evening before and in the morning, ARTVA turned on and tried on departure, safety distance on the suspicious slopes, early return when the sun warms up. Grade 3 (marked) or higher the prudence has to be raised a lot: it is the degree in which, according to statistics AINEVA, most avalanche accidents are concentrated in Italy. The scale and criteria are those of European scale of avalanche danger. official data · AINEVA

Calculator of travel time

method CAI / DIN 33466
—time of journey
—trip duration with stops
—of which ascent
—of which descent
—departure to return at 17:00

The vertical time (health + descent) and horizontal time are calculated separately, then the greater is added to the middle of the minor: it is the rule that approaches more to the real time on alpine terrain. The stops are estimated in 15 minutes every 2 hours of walking plus 30 minutes of lunch break.

Equipment

What it really needs, with the indicative prices of the new in Italy. The rule of expenditure is simple: you invest on what touches the body and on what saves your life — boots, shell, ARTVA — and you save on everything else, at least at the beginning.

The names of the equipment are search links on Amazon. As an Amazon Affiliate we receive a gain from eligible purchases: for you the price does not change.

Summer hiking

The minimum for an E-type trip

Via Ferrata (EEA)

Non-negotiable: all certified

The hardware sets have an expiration and weight limit of the user: they buy new, never second hand, and they replace after a fall.

Ski touring

The highest expenditure, but lasts ten years

Before buying: rent a complete set for two or three exits and take a course. The right material depends on how skiing, not reviews.

Snowshoe and light winter

The cheapest entrance to the winter mountain

Where to buy

Backpack Checklist

Tip the items while preparing the backpack: the list remains saved, so you will find it ready for the next exit.

0/0

Try the boots in the afternoon

The foot at the end of the day is swollen as after three hours of walking. Try with the socks you will really use and walk on the downhill platform: the finger should not touch the tip.

On the use: yes and no

Yes to backpacks, sticks, batteries, skis and skins. No a set from ferrata, helmets, ropes, harnesses and ARTVA old generation: you don't know their history and they are exactly what you have to save.

Rent before buying

A ski touring set is offered at €30–45 per day in the Alpine resorts. Two weekend rental costs less than a wrong purchase from 1500 €.

End of season = half price

April and May for winter material, September and October for the Summer. That's where we buy shells and skis, not in December.

10

Skiing

The Italian Alps in winter are three different worlds: the slopes of the great ski resorts, the bottom rings in the valley floor, and the off-piste that leads to ski touring. Many pass from one to another in two seasons: it makes sense to know where to end.

Skipass daily in high season: indicating 60–90 € in large areas, less in smaller areas and with multi-day or seasonal formulas. Prices and opening dates are checked on official sites.

How much the ski pass costs

indicative prices high season
—skipass spending
—average cost per day
—Seasonal subscription
—days beyond which the season is worth

The multi-day cut the price

From the third day onwards the daily rate drops considerably: buying six consecutive days costs much less than six daily dissolved.

Book online and in advance

Almost all areas apply a dynamic discount to those who buy in advance weeks, and avoid the queue to cashiers.

Watch the card and deposit

Keycard support costs 5 € refundable: preserve it, recharges online in the following years.

Accident insurance

In Italy civil liability is mandatory for skiers: often you add to the ski pass for a few euros per day, check if your policy already covers it.

Cross-country skiing

Cogni

About 80 km of rings in the Park of Gran Paradiso, with the floor of Sant'Orso and Valnontey between the icefalls. The most beautiful in Italy for many landowners.

Dobbiaco – Cortina

The track on the old railway between the Dolomites, seat of the World Cup. Almost flat track, suitable for beginners as well.

Val di Fiemme

The center of the Italian bottom: 150 km of slopes, the Centre of the Fund of Lake Tesero and the Marcialonga at the end of January.

From the track to the real snow

01

First the course, then the skis

A CAI ski touring course or two days with an alpine guide teach the evaluation of the slope, conversion and self-surrection in the avalanche. It's the investment that makes it more.

02

Learn how to use ARTVA before using it

A search is carried out in the free trial camps that many locations breed on the track. Under the avalanche you have 15 minutes: the gesture must be automatic.

03

Start from MS trips

Punta della Rossa, Monte Sodadura, Cima Bocche: large slopes, little exposure, quick return. You can find them in the winter section of the routes.

Avalanche bills: AINEVA collects those of all the Italian Alpine regions. You read the night before and the morning of the trip, always.

11

The mountain in van

Sleep at the starting car park and attack the path at six in the morning, without waking up on the highway: it is the real advantage of the van in the mountains, much more than the photo with the open door. Here is where to rent it, where to legally stop and three itineraries already ready.

Three routes

7 days · ~380 km · June–September

loop of the Dolomites

From Bolzano to Alpe di Siusi, then Val Gardena, Passo Sella and Passo Pordoi, Cortina with Tre Cime, Val Pusteria and Braies, return to Val Badia.

  • Walking mat: Seceda, Cinque Torri, Giro delle Tre Cime, Lago di Braies at dawn
  • Support: camper areas equipped in Ortisei, Cortina, Dobbiaco and San Vigilio
  • Please note: in South Tyrol the night stop outside the dedicated areas is controlled and fined. It's planned here, it's not improvised.

5 days · ~260 km · June– October

Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc

From Aosta to Valsavarenche, then Cogne, the Colle del Nivolet from the Piedmontese side and finally the Val Ferret under Mont Blanc.

  • Walking mat: Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, Valnontey, Piano del Nivolet, Rifugio Bonatti
  • Support: municipal areas in Cogne, Valsavarenche and Courmayeur; agricampeggi in the valley floor
  • Please note: narrow valley roads with bends, little suitable for vehicles above 7 meters. Nivolet closed to cars on summer weekends.

6 days · ~320 km · July–September

Stelvio, Livigno and Val di Mello

From Bormio to Passo dello Stelvio, descent into Val Venosta, Livigno and finally Valtellina to Val Masino.

  • Walking mat: Piz Umbrail, Cancano lakes, Val di Mello, Ferro waterfalls
  • Support: Bormio camper area, Livigno (extradoganale area, cheapest fuel), San Martino Val Masino
  • Please note: the Stelvio opens from late May to October and has 48 hairpins: brakes in order and descent with the motor in couple.

Where to rent

Where to stay

The rules in two rows

In Italy the stopover the motorhome is allowed wherever the vehicle is allowed, provided that it is not allowed campsites: no tables, chairs, veranda, stabilizers feet or drains to the ground. Many Alpine municipalities still prohibit the night stop by order, and South Tyrol is the most severe area: check the signs at the entrance to the parking lot. Free camping is forbidden almost everywhere in national parks and protected areas.

In winter: winter tyres or chains on board mandatory on most alpine roads from 15 November to 15 April, stationary heating lit only with adequate ventilation, water in the tanks freezing below zero.

Parking of the path is not a campsite

You come in the evening, sleep, leave early. Leaving the van all day occupying two places in a crowded starting parking lot is the fastest way to get the ban order the following year.

Water and Empty

Please note in advance the camper service along the route: at high altitude there are no. Grey is not discharged into the mountain graves, it ends in the streams.

Share and sleep

Sleeping above 2,000 m on the first night can give bad headaches and bad sleep. Better get up to the pass in the morning and sleep at the bottom of the valley.

Real cost

Rent 90 €, diesel 25 €, parking area 15–25 €: a week in two is around 900–1,200 € all inclusive, often less than seven nights in the mountain hut or hotel.

News and rules

updated on September 2026

What has changed in recent years for those who walk in the mountains. Access rules and quotations are reviewed season by season: links lead to official sources, check them before getting in the car.

Safety

Incidents in the mountain still growing, the CAI insists on preparation

The analysis of the Italian Alpine Club returns on the same factors as ever: disproportionate itineraries compared to training, late departures, poor weather reading, and an increase of occasional visitors attracted by viral destinations. The summer remains the period with more interventions of the Alpine Rescue, and a very significant proportion of the accidents in hiking takes place Downhill, with accumulated fatigue. The updated numbers are in the annual report of the CNSAS. official data · CNSAS and CAI

Access

Lake Braies: high season access

In the central months of the summer the entrance to Val di Braies with motor vehicles is regulated by digital booking in the middle of the day, with automatic reading of the plates at the mouth of the valley. Access is free on foot, by bike and by public bus line from the valley floor. Dates, times and rates change every year: prags.bz and Province of Bolzano.

Access

Closed numbers and shuttles elsewhere in the Dolomites

The model Braies has extended: road of the Three Peaks for a fee with parking lot often saturated by 8, closures with alternate plates or obligatory shuttles on some steps and in different side valleys (Val Fiscalina, Alpe di Siusi, Val Venegia, Colle del Nivolet on summer weekends). Practical rule: arrive early or use the bus, and check the site of the commune or the resort the evening before.

Norma

ARTVA, mandatory shovel and probe on open snowy ground

The norm on safety in winter sports (d.lgs. 40/2021) imposes to those who practice ski touring and hiking on open snowy terrain — therefore also many snowshoeers — to equip themselves with research apparatus in avalanche, shovel and probe. The CAI asked for clarifications on the exact perimeter of the norm, but the practical principle does not change: if you go where you can download snow, the equipment serves, and you should know how to use. In-depth study

Safety

Geolocation: 112 e app allertamento

The Single European Number 112 applies everywhere on the Alps and automatically transmits the location from recent smartphones. The CAI offers GeoResQ, tracking app and rescue request, free for members. In South Tyrol and in different regions the regional emergency app is also widespread: install it and try it first of the trip, not on the path without field.

Mountain huts

Refuge: book, and book soon

For mountain huts along the high streets, summer reservations open in spring and places in the classic stages end in a few weeks. Almost everywhere you pay half board, the sleeping bag is mandatory, the connection is poor and in some cases you only accept cash. Distinguishing without warning is the fastest way to keep a blank place in a full structure: a phone call is enough.

Conditions

Glaciers in retreat: classic itineraries that change

The glacial retreat and the degradation of the permafrost are changing normal approaches and routes on the highest peaks: ice traits become unstable dry, cracks discovered earlier in the season, increase of the fall rocks in the hot hours. Even for the hiker something changes: to learn about the conditions of the day is worth more than any written report years ago.

13

Tips you learn by walking

Small things that no guide writes on the cover and that change the day.

The trip ends at home, not at the top

At the moment of the summit you consumed half the energies but only one third of the risks. Give yourself an hour of reversal: if at that hour you are not at the top, go back. Deciding it first removes the discussion at the wrong time.

Start slowly.

The first twenty minutes must seem too slow to you: it's time for the body to get into rhythm. The strong part stops ten times, the slow part arrives first.

The rhythm dictates the slowest

In group you walk at the speed of those who struggle more, and that person stands in front, not in the tail. No one waits at the crossroads. He expects first.

Drink before thirst

Small regular sips, 400–600 ml per hour if it is hot. The thirst comes when you are already in deficit, and dehydration occurs as cramps, headaches and wrong decisions.

The descent deserves more attention than the climb

It is where the Alpine Rescue records a large part of distortions and falls: stanche legs, rocks rolling, desire to make soon. Short pass, soft knees, elongated sticks of 5–10 cm.

Footwear before shoes

Half of the bladders arises from the wrong stocking: no cotton, flat seams, right size. And the new shoes do not open on a long path.

Learn how to read the signs

White-red flag with the number of the path, repeated at sight. If you've been walking for more than ten minutes without seeing one, you've probably lost the path: go back to the last sure sign instead of looking forward.

The GPS track does not replace the head

Download offline maps and bring a powerbank, but also hold a card. A phone that turns off at −5 °C is not a theoretical hypothesis.

Front always in the backpack

Also for two hours of trail in June. A delay, a distortion or an improvised fog turn twilight into a serious problem without light.

In the mountain hut, few rules but firm

Leave your boots at the entrance, bring a sleeping bag liner, keep quiet after 22:00 and confirm your booking. If you will arrive late, call the hut: otherwise the manager may worry and call mountain rescue.

Respects who lives there and who works there

Rich gates, cattle protection dogs wandered quietly and without screaming, wastes brought down, no drones over the pastures. Flowers and minerals remain where they are.

Build your step, not the web step

Guide times are average. Register your exits below for a few months: you will discover your real rhythm in meters of altitude per hour, and that is the number with which to plan the most demanding trips.

04

My time

Record every exit, summer or winter: the diary calculates your real rhythm in meters of elevation gain per hour and compares it with the reference time of the route. Already from the first recorded output, get your own personal coefficient and apply it to all the path boards: if you are faster than the reference — and many are — estimates will adjust to your step instead of remaining the prudent driving ones.

Import GPX of your hikes

Drag here GPX files — export a Strava, Garmin Connect, Komoot or Wikiloc task — or choose files. I read duration, distance and difference of real level, I recognize the path from the starting point and fill the diary alone. The files remain on your device: they are not loaded anywhere.

On Strava: open the → menu “...” → Export GPX. You can also ask for full export from your profile and drag all files here together.

Quick insertion

Trips that you have already done: write only the total time (format 2:30) and press forward. They need to calibrate your step.

New output

Link to the archive...

03

On the trail

The three questions you ask half ascent: how much is missing, how much I put, what time does. Start the trip at the start of the path and the phone responds on its own: use GPS, which also works without field, and compare what you have already done with the route data. In the end, it saves the output in the diary with a touch.

The GPS remains active while the page is open: keep the screen on or reopen the file to resume. No data comes out of the phone.

Is the rain coming?

Hourly forecast on the starting point of the chosen route, from the Open-Meteo open service. Download it before leaving: it remains saved and reread it without field, with the time of the last update.

Bring the site to the mountain

The offline copy of TREKANDO (trekando.html) is a single file that does not need servers or connection: once saved on the phone it works by air, in shelter and at the bottom of a no-field valley. The only things that require network are photos and maps: without connection to their place see the drawing illustrations, and everything else — routes, times, computers, diary, checklist — continue to work.

Install it as an app

With the icon on the Home screen, full screen and without browser bar. Open it. trekando.com from the phone and tap the button below, or use Share → “Add to Home” on iPhone. From there on it works offline on its own, without network.

The installation appears when the site is open from a web address.

Paths to take to the valley

The paths are calculated on the OpenStreetMap network when you open the map the first time, and are saved. If you already know that where you go there is no field, download them all now: a few seconds on the route, then they work without network.

Or bring the file as it is

The downloaded file also contains the already recorded outputs: open it on the phone and find your personal coefficient.

iPhone and iPad

From Safari

  • Open the file and tap Share it → Save to File, choose On my iPhone
  • If you receive it via message or email, tap the attachment → Save to File
  • To reopen it: app File → touch trekando.html: Opens in Safari without network
  • Convenient: Keep it in a "Mountain" folder along with GPX tracks

Android Android

From Chrome

  • Tape Download the site above: ends in Download
  • To reopen it: app File or Download → touch trekando.html
  • Chrome opens it from file:// without connection
  • You can move it to your folder or to an SD card

Good to know

How your data remains

  • The diary exits and checklists are saved in the browser of that device
  • By switching from computer to phone the data does not move by itself: use Export and Import, or download the site with the times already in
  • An update of the file does not erase the data saved in the same browser
  • If you delete navigation data, the diary departs from zero: it exports every now and then
