How to prepare a trekking
An excursion is planned at home. The causes that the Alpine rescue and the CAI reported more often in accidents in hiking are trivial: disproportionate itinerary than preparation, late departure, inadequate equipment and footwear, uncontrolled weather. These six passes are done the night before, in 20 minutes.
On this page: official data = taken from CAI, CNSAS, AINEVA or regional weather services, with the link to the source · estimate TREKANDO = calculation or agreement of this site · your data = measured by your hikes.
01
Choose based on numbers
Not at the picture. The three data that count are elevation gain (D+), development in kilometers and difficulty. The tiring difference, the kilometers consume time, the difficulty says if you need experience.
- First release of the season: maximum 600 m of D+
- Good training: 1000–1200 m of D+
- Add 20% if the backpack exceeds 8 kg
02
Calculate time, then time
The travel time is not the trip time: add stops, photos, lunch. Then work backwards from the desired return time and check the time of sunset.
- Ascent: 300–350 m of elevation gain per hour
- Discipline: 450–550 m per hour
- Floor: 4 km/h
- Supports: +15 min every 2 hours
03
Read two weather, not one
At the altitude counts the zero share, the wind and the time of thunderstorms, not the symbol of the sun. In summer the storms arrive from the early afternoon: you leave early and you are returning by 15.
- Regional ARPA and provincial bills
- Avalanche bulletin (also in May, at altitude)
- Call the mountain hut: knows the residual snow
04
Prepare the layered backpack
Also, in July, even for two hours. At altitude you lose about 6 °C every 1000 m and the wind does the rest.
- Shoe with carved sole and sustained ankle
- Windproof/ Raincoat + fleece
- 1.5–2 l of water, simple sugars
- Frontal, dressing kit, thermal sheet
- Chart 1:25,000 + GPS track offline
05
Leave it to me
To a precise person, with itinerary and time of supposed return: if you need a search, know where to look changes everything. The CNSAS repeats it in every prevention campaign.
- Name of the route and starting point
- Return time within which to give the alarm
- Share the live location if you have field
06
Know what to do if something goes wrong
Call me the 112, stay where you are, make you visible. If you can, first activate an app that transmits the coordinates.
- International signal: 6 calls per minute, then 1 minute break
- Do not go down by canalons or "scorciatoie"
- If the fog drops: stop, do not improvise
The difficulty scale CAI
It is the theme that you find on the signs, guides and all the tabs of this site. Reading it well avoids 80% of trouble.
In winter everything changes: the scale for skiing and snowshoeing
With the snow the path disappears and the ground becomes assessable only through Avalanche bulletin (European scale from 1 to 5) and slope of slopes: above 30° the risk of detachment grows clearly. For ski touring you use the Blachère scale, which describes the difficulty ski resort of the descent; for snowshoes it counts above all the exposure to the danger of avalanches of the path.
Winter rule: avalanche bulletin the evening before and in the morning, ARTVA turned on and tried on departure, safety distance on the suspicious slopes, early return when the sun warms up. Grade 3 (marked) or higher the prudence has to be raised a lot: it is the degree in which, according to statistics AINEVA, most avalanche accidents are concentrated in Italy. The scale and criteria are those of European scale of avalanche danger. official data · AINEVA
Calculator of travel time
method CAI / DIN 33466
The vertical time (health + descent) and horizontal time are calculated separately, then the greater is added to the middle of the minor: it is the rule that approaches more to the real time on alpine terrain. The stops are estimated in 15 minutes every 2 hours of walking plus 30 minutes of lunch break.
